April Meeting

Please join us for our next meeting on Saturday April 11.  Steve Arthur from Steve Arthur Orchids will be speaking on orchid collecting in Latin America. Lunch at noon and meeting at 1PM.

Steve will be selling plants, so no farmers market this month.

Our speaker this month will be Steve Arthur, an accredited AOS Judge and accomplished orchid grower and hybridizer out of South Carolina. Steve has been growing orchids for over 40 years and, in that time, he has mastered the art of growing and reproducing these beautiful and varied plants. Whether climbing a tree in Central America, or finding native species near home, Steve is always on the lookout for the most unusual of species.

His current greenhouse, in Graniteville, SC covers 10,000 square feet and includes a diverse collection of orchids with a tendency towards Cattleyas. He has been making crosses for years. From his lab he does contract work (aka sowing and harvesting seeds) for other nurseries. Steve is also closely affiliated with Carter & Holmes, frequently selling plants for them at the big Florida shows.

Steve will be sharing his experience of travelling through Central and South America, collecting orchids from the wild. In addition to the talk, Steve will have plants propagated form those collections for sale! This promises to be a very interesting presentation and perhaps we’ll be able to take home a little piece of the experience to add to our collections!

  1. I noticed a photo on Flickr from the Piedmont Orchid Show that was taken on March 18, 2012. The plant is a schombolaelia Cinnamon Crisp. I would very much like to know to whom the plant belongs and how to get one of my own. Can you help me? Thanks!

  2. Does the show have an admission fee? If so, why doesn’t the website mention this????? Also, does UNCC charge for parking? Why isn’t there a phone number to call listed on the show website?
